Whoever visits Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, shouldn’t miss the Altneu Synagogue in Maislova Street while sightseeing. The name comes from “altnai”, meaning “provisional”. Several mysterious legends are connected with this oldest Jewish synagogue in Prague. Two angels are said to have given the Jews in Prague the order never to change or renovate anything on the building over the years. Those who did so would be prophesied death. And so it happened that everyone who did renovation work on the building in spite of what the angels said suffered terrible deaths. In 1558 a terrible fire broke out near the Altneu Synagogue, and it was like a miracle that the building wasn’t damaged. The legend tells that the miracle was worked by two angels in the form of doves, who succeeded in stopping the fire spread to the Altneu Synagogue. This early Gothic building has been standing in the old town of Prague since 1270 and is therefore the oldest remaining European synagogue.

It was developed as a low-maintenance machine for airports with bad facilities and rapidly made a name for itself as a particularly robust and reliable machine. It was originally built with only one engine, and the first tri-motored version flew in 1932. The first two of these were put into service in Bolivia. From 1934, the Lufthansa flew the Ju 52 and already one year later, 85% of their fleet of aircraft consisted of Ju 52. Its maximum speed of 290 km/h wasn’t particularly high, but the take-off and landing speeds of 120 and 106 km/h were also low. It was designed for a crew of three and 15-17 passengers or 1,500 kg cargo load and a cruise altitude of 2,500 m. The complete machine cost about 230,000 Reichsmark. Even today there are still some airworthy machines. The Ju 52 is also on display e.g. in the Deutsche Museum in Munich and in the Technical Museums in Sinsheim, Berlin and Dessau.

The flying boat Dornier Do X was produced from 1928 by the Dornier Company in Friedrichshafen. On its maiden flight on 12th July 1929 it was the largest aircraft in the world. During the period from 1928 to 1931 three aircraft of this type were produced. But already in 1933 its service was discontinued. The technical and economic problems were too great. Nor was it suitable to be used for military service.

The Dornier Do X was a high-wing aircraft with a wingspan of 48 metres. To power the propellers, twelve engines were assembled in six nacelles on the wings. The aircraft reached a maximum speed of 210 kilometres per hour. On the maiden flight in 1929 the aircraft carried 159 passengers and 10 crew members on board. This record was only broken twenty years later.

The interior of the impressive flying boat was extremely luxuriously outfitted. There were three decks with generously sized cabins for the passengers, a kitchen, a recreation salon, a sleeping salon, a smoking room and a bar.

In November 1930 the Do X set off on a flight to the Netherlands, England, France, Portugal, Gran Canaria and West Africa. After the Atlantic crossing, the Do X flew as far as Rio de Janeiro, then along the South American coast to the Caribbean and finally to Miami and New York. Through this long-haul flight, the aircraft gained a high reputation worldwide. There was even a reception at the White House in Washington in honour of the crew. The Do X returned to Berlin in May 1932 and in June 1932 started on a tour of Germany for five months.

However, one year after the spectacular flight round the world an accident occurred: in May 1933 the flying boat was supposed to land on a reservoir lake near Passau. But as the pilot made an over-steep landing, the tail section was torn off. The mishap was at first covered up, but it was later made known to the public by photos that had by chance been taken by a spectator. That meant the end of the Do X as a passenger aircraft.

In 1933 the Do X was dismantled and exhibited in the forerunner of the German Museum of Technology in Berlin. It was, however, destroyed during the war. The tail section that broke off in the accident near Passau is now on display at the Dornier Museum in Friedrichshafen.

The Piper PA-18 Super Cub was mass-produced from the year 1949. The training and reconnaissance plane was originally used for military purposes. It was the successor of the Piper J-3, but the construction was greatly altered. By using aluminium profiles on the wings and reinforcement of the fuselage increased loads and better flying performances were possible. The Piper had two seats and was supplied with different engines. A small generator supplied electricity for the radio set. It was only refitted with batteries later, so that the engine could also be started electrically.

The Piper Super Cub was a low-cost plane and was therefore also very popular in Europe for pilot training in the armed forces. Germany and the Benelux countries were the main customers within Europe. The training planes of the German Federal Armed Forces were additionally equipped with couplings for towing gliders.

After one Piper factory in the USA closed during the 80s, from then up into the 90s only assembly kits of the Super Cub were made. With the sale of more than 40,000 Piper Super Cubs, it is considered to be one of the most successful models of aircraft world-wide and is widespread at small airports throughout Europe. This aircraft model became well-known in Germany especially through the Burda Squadron in the 60s.

מטוס פוקר I, קנ"מ 1/20

Schreiber Bogen Fokker DR I, 1/20
דגם נייר של מטוס פוקר (הברון האדום)
קנ"מ 1:20

During the First World War the Dutch aircraft constructor Anthony H.G. Fokker developed a triplane in Schwerin as the counterpart to the newly built British Sopwith triplane. Originally it was given the model designation F 1, but was renamed Fokker DR I in order to emphasize the special feature of the triplane. With the prototype the wings were not connected to each other, but only fixed at the fuselage of the plane. As this construction proved to be too unstable, Fokker soon developed an improved version with connecting shafts between the wings. The lining of the undercarriage axle served as auxiliary buoyancy wings. The horizontal tail was brought forward a lot for the first time and merged into the fuselage at a pointed angle. The Fokker DR I was about 5.7 m long and had a wing span of about 7.2 m. At an altitude of 4,000 m it reached a top speed of 165 km/h. It needed just under three minutes to climb to an altitude of 1,000 m and could stay in the air up to 1.5 hours at a time. So in spite of its compact method of construction, the plane distinguished itself through its manoeuvrability and performance.

Serial production began in July 1917, but many of the planes had defects and crashed. For that reason, at the end of 1917 all DR I planes were given a flying ban and this was only lifted when the most important defects had been overcome by strengthening the wing assembly. The production of the Fokker DR I was stopped in May 1918. Up to then Fokker had produced a total of 300 planes. The planes were in use until the summer of 1918.

At that time, the Fokker DR I was one of the most famous planes. The reason was most probably because one of the planes was flown by one of the most successful pilots, Baron Manfred von Richthofen. In order to show his success and leadership position clearly, and in order to provoke his enemies, he had his plane painted red. That is why he was also known by his nickname “the Red Baron”). His enemies also quickly realized that he was one of the best pilots. For that reason they began to look out for the red triplane in order to shoot it down. In order to prevent this, all the planes in Richthofen’s squadron were painted red. At that time, Richthofen and other well-known pilots were very popular. Above all, young people honoured them as their heroes and idols. The later so popular pilot idol Ernst Udet also belonged to the Red Baron’s fighter squadron. (See also the Schreiber Sheet No. 562 “Udet U 12 Flamingo”).)

In the propaganda of the First World War the aerial combats were often compared with medieval knights’ tournaments. In spite of the war, this admiration stretched beyond the German frontiers. Richthofen was also very well-known in the enemy countries. On 21 April 1918 Richthofen’s plane was behind enemy lines and was shot down. He was first buried in a military cemetery in France and in 1925 his body was brought back to Germany and buried there.
